Sherwood Park Skatepark is a concrete skate facility in the Onerahi suburb of Whangarei, built in 2015 and designed by skatepark specialist Richard Smith of Rich Landscapes. The park is located at Sherwood Park and sits within a residential area of Onerahi — Whangarei’s harbour peninsula suburb — making it the closest skatepark to the harbour end of the city. It is free to use and caters to skateboarders, scooter riders, and BMX riders with a range of concrete obstacles including a mini ramp and several street features.

About Sherwood Park Skatepark
Sherwood Park Skatepark was delivered for the Onerahi community in 2015 following local advocacy for a skate facility in the suburb. Onerahi is a distinct peninsula suburb connected to the rest of Whangarei by the Onerahi Causeway, and residents had long relied on travelling into central Whangarei to access skateparks. The Sherwood Park facility addressed that gap.
The park was designed by Richard Smith of Rich Landscapes, the same Whangarei-based skatepark designer responsible for the 2021 Pohe Island Skatepark redevelopment. The Sherwood Park design is compact but varied, combining a concrete miniramp with a collection of street-style obstacles. The obstacle set includes ledges, a pole jam, round and square rails, wedges, and quarter pipes of varied heights — providing enough variety for riders to develop and link different skills across the park.
The quarter pipes at different heights are a useful feature for progressive learning. Shorter quarter pipes are more approachable for newer transition riders working toward the taller sections. The miniramp provides a flow experience distinct from the street features, giving the park two different riding environments in a compact footprint.
Onerahi: Skating on the Harbour Peninsula
Sherwood Park Skatepark is the only skate facility on the Onerahi peninsula. Onerahi is Whangarei’s only seaside suburb — a harbour-facing area about 9 km from the city centre, connected by the Onerahi Causeway. For local young riders, the Sherwood Park facility means skating doesn’t require a trip across the causeway into central Whangarei.
Sherwood Park itself is a neighbourhood park in a residential setting, and the skatepark is embedded in that green space rather than sitting in a purely urban or industrial precinct. This gives it a more relaxed atmosphere than central-city facilities, and it draws primarily from the surrounding neighbourhood.
