Onerahi is Whangarei’s only seaside suburb, a peninsula extending into Whangārei Harbour roughly 9 km south-east of the city centre. The suburb is connected to the mainland by the Onerahi Causeway and is largely surrounded by harbour waters, giving it a distinct coastal character.

The suburb’s position means most residents enjoy direct harbour views, with the lower coastal road tracing the foreshore past beaches, boat ramps and reserves. The Onerahi Causeway provides the primary road link to central Whangarei.
The suburb features two main road circuits. An upper road follows the perimeter of Whangarei Airport, while the lower road runs along the harbour edge. This layout highlights the peninsula’s dual character as both an aviation hub and a residential coastal area.
Whangarei Airport sits entirely within Onerahi and serves as the main air gateway for the region. The airport site was developed using fill material from a former Māori pā located just to the north of the current runway area.
