Whale Bay Loop Track Tūtūkākā Coast: Coastal Walk from Matapouri to Whale Bay

The Whale Bay Loop Track is a coastal walk on the Tūtūkākā Coast that combines headland bush, sea views, and access to two of the coast’s most sheltered beaches — Matapouri Bay and Whale Bay. The approximately 4 kilometre loop takes 1 to 1.5 hours and is generally easy, though some sections of beach access involve rock scrambles that are limited by the tide. About the Track

The loop starts at the Matapouri Beach car park and heads north along the beach before climbing over the headland through native coastal bush. The bush section offers elevated views along the coast and down to Whale Bay below. The descent brings you to Whale Bay — one of the most sheltered and picturesque beaches on the Tūtūkākā Coast. The return leg follows the beach and headland back to Matapouri.

Access around the rocks at the Whale Bay end is limited at high tide. The section requires a short scramble over rocks to get onto and off the beach — if the tide is fully in, this becomes impassable. Aim to walk when the tide is at or approaching low to ensure access throughout the loop.

Marine wildlife sightings — dolphins, seals — are possible from the headland sections. Native flora along the bush section includes pōhutukawa and native coastal shrubs.

What Visitors Say

“One of the best short coastal walks I’ve done in Northland. The view of Whale Bay from the headland is stunning. Make sure you check the tides first.”

“Beautiful walk — Matapouri to Whale Bay and back, through great bush with sea views all the way. Took us just over an hour. The rock scramble at Whale Bay is easy but not suitable for very young kids.”
