About Waipu Cove
The beach sits at the southern end of Bream Bay, where the coast curves around to face north-east. The consistent surf comes from the open Bream Bay fetch, making it popular with local surfers year-round. On moderate swell days, the conditions suit bodyboarders and beginner surfers; larger swells attract more experienced riders. The beach itself is a generous stretch of sand backed by low-lying coastal vegetation.
Water quality is monitored by the Northland Regional Council during summer — results are available through the LAWA website. As with any surf beach, be aware of rip currents and always swim between the flags when lifeguards are on duty.
Waipu Township
The township of Waipu, about 5 kilometres inland, has cafes, shops and the well-regarded Waipu Museum, which tells the story of the Scottish settlers who arrived here in the 1850s. It’s worth combining a beach day at Waipu Cove with a stop in the township. The Waipu Caves, a system of glowworm caves, are also nearby.
What Visitors Say
“A great surf beach with a proper lifeguard patrol — rare in Northland. The waves are consistent and the beach is beautiful. The drive down from Whangarei is easy.”
“We camped nearby and spent two days at Waipu Cove. The surf was fun for the whole family. Make sure you check the patrol hours before you go — they don’t patrol every day.”
