Ocean Beach is the main surf and swimming beach at Whangārei Heads, about 40 kilometres south-east of Whangārei city. It’s the only patrolled beach in the district — the Whangārei Heads Volunteer Surf Life Saving Club has operated here since 1968, with lifeguards on duty during the holiday season and summer weekends. The beach is consistently rated among New Zealand’s most challenging patrolled beaches, with rip currents that require care even for strong swimmers.

About Ocean Beach
The beach stretches along the base of the Whangārei Heads, a dramatic volcanic peninsula that rises behind it. The consistent Pacific swell that reaches Ocean Beach is what makes it one of Northland’s better surf spots — and also what makes it dangerous for casual swimmers. Rips run along the beach, particularly after strong easterly swells. Surf Rescue New Zealand has ranked Ocean Beach among the ten most dangerous patrolled beaches in the country.
For this reason, the Surf Life Saving Club’s presence matters. During the holiday season, lifeguards patrol from 11am to 5pm daily. Outside patrol hours, the beach is unmonitored. Non-swimmers and families with young children are better suited to the calmer harbour beaches at McLeod Bay or Urquharts Bay on the sheltered side of the Heads.
Surfing at Ocean Beach
The consistent swell and sandy bottom make Ocean Beach well suited to surfing and bodyboarding. Swells arrive most reliably from the east and north-east, and the beach break works across a range of conditions. Beginners on bodyboards do well here when the surf is moderate; experienced surfers come for the larger swell days when the beach is firing. There is no surf hire available at the beach itself — bring your own gear.

“Best surf beach in Northland for an easy day out. It’s worth the drive from Whangarei just for the scenery, let alone the waves.”
