About Tikipunga

Tikipunga grew rapidly during the 1960s, and much of its housing stock dates from that era — solid suburban homes on established sections that give the area a settled, mature character. The suburb is the third largest in Whangārei by residential housing stock, and its population of around 8,500 makes it one of the more significant communities in the district.

The suburb’s most famous landmark is just beyond its eastern edge: Otuihau/Whangārei Falls, a 26-metre curtain waterfall on the Hātea River that draws visitors from across Northland and beyond. The Hatea River Walk begins in central Whangārei and passes through the suburb on its way to the falls.
