About Kamo Library
Kamo Library was built in 1938 with the foundation stone laid by Murdock McInnes, chairman of the Kamo Town Board, on 5 May 1938. It initially operated on a subscription basis like many smaller New Zealand libraries at the time.
In the early 1960s the Whangarei District Council reviewed the subscription model. The formerly independent Kamo Town Library became a branch of the Whangārei Public Library on 4 October 1965. This change brought free membership, extended opening hours, more books, children’s materials, improved reference services and access to the national library network.
The library continues to tailor its service to community needs with a personal approach. It offers many of the same core services as the larger Whangārei Central Library while providing convenient local access for northern suburbs residents. Membership remains free for Whangārei district residents, and items can be returned to any branch in the network.
The branch features an accessible entrance, after-hours returns, books and audio-visual material, computers and internet, free Wi-Fi, and printing, copying and scanning services during opening hours.
