Matapouri Bay: Swimming, Snorkelling and Rock Pools on the Tutukaka Coast

Matapouri Bay is a sheltered horseshoe-shaped beach on the Tutukaka Coast, about 35 kilometres north-east of Whangārei. It’s one of the most popular swimming beaches in the region — calm enough for children in summer, with rocky outcrops at each end that reward snorkellers with schools of small fish, sea stars and the occasional blue maomao. A coastal walkway connects Matapouri to Whale Bay over the headland, adding an easy 40-minute each-way walk to the day. Worth noting: the Mermaid Pools north of Matapouri are currently under rāhui placed by local hapū Te Whānau ā Rangiwhakaahu — respect this restriction and stay out.

About Matapouri Bay

The bay sits on a short peninsula off the main Tutukaka Coast road, reached by a narrow side road from Ngunguru. The beach curves around a calm, naturally sheltered bay — the horseshoe shape breaks most swell, leaving water that is safe and clear for swimming even when the open coast is rougher. Facilities are good: toilets, outdoor showers and picnic areas with tables and barbecue stands make it a practical family beach day.

The rocky outcrops at both ends of the beach are the best spot for snorkelling, particularly the northern end where the reef extends further and water clarity tends to be better. Small fish are abundant in the shallows, and you’ll find sea stars, crabs and various marine invertebrates in the rock pools at low tide — worth exploring with children even without a mask and snorkel.

Whale Bay Walk

A well-formed coastal track leaves from the northern end of Matapouri Beach and crosses the headland to Whale Bay, a secluded cove accessible only on foot. The walk takes about 40 minutes one way and involves some climbing over the headland, with coastal views across the Tutukaka area. Whale Bay itself is smaller and quieter than Matapouri, with clear water and a rocky shoreline. Swimming is possible but the beach is narrow at high tide — check timing before heading over.

Mermaid Pools — Rāhui Notice

The Mermaid Pools, a series of rock pools north of Matapouri Bay, have attracted unsustainable visitor numbers in recent years. Local hapū Te Whānau ā Rangiwhakaahu have placed a rāhui (temporary prohibition) on the area. Visitors should not enter the pools while the rāhui is in place — respect the kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of the hapū over this taonga.
