Mata is a rural suburb in the Whangarei District, south of Whangārei, in the inland country that leads toward Bream Bay. It is not a beach settlement, and it does not have a town centre of its own. Addresses are recorded on State Highway 1 and on country roads such as Hewlett Road, Sloane Road, Salmon Road and Takahiwai Road.
The setting is pasture and lifestyle properties, with shops, schools and other daily services in Whangārei or in the Bream Bay towns further south. For most people Mata is a quiet place to live, or a stretch of road to pass through, rather than a destination in its own right.

About Mata
Mata sits in open country south of the city, inland from the southern shore of Whangārei Harbour. It is filed with the Bream Bay localities because that is the coast it looks toward, but the suburb itself is rural rather than coastal. There is no shopping strip, no square and no cluster of public buildings that would mark a village. What you see from the road is farmland, shelter belts, driveways and scattered houses on larger sections.
State Highway 1 is the spine. It carries traffic between Whangārei and the Bream Bay coast, including Ruakākā, One Tree Point and Waipū. Local roads leave the highway and run through the suburb.
Hewlett Road, Sloane Road, Salmon Road and parts of Takahiwai Road all carry Mata addresses, and the postal code used for those addresses is 0171. Driving is the practical way in and out. A local bus stop in Mata was not identified.
The cultural centre for this part of the harbour is not in Mata itself. Takahiwai Marae, at 229 Takahiwai Road, is the home marae of Patuharakeke. Māori Maps records the marae as belonging to the Patuharakeke hapū of Ngātiwai, with connections to Ngāti Whātua, Ngāpuhi and Te Uri o Hau.
The meeting house is Rangiora. The marae connects to the ancestral mountain Manaia and to the harbour, Whangārei Terenga Parāoa. A published meaning for the name Mata, as used for this suburb, was not found, so it is best left untranslated rather than guessed from the common Māori word.
Day to day, Mata works as a rural address within reach of both the city and the coast. Whangārei has the supermarkets, hospital, secondary services and larger employers. Ruakākā, further down State Highway 1, is the nearer Bream Bay town for everyday shops and for Bream Bay College.
The harbour shore, Marsden Point and the Bream Bay beaches are a drive away, not a walk from the letterbox. People who live here trade a town centre for space, and visitors should not expect cafés, a playground or a signed lookout with the suburb’s name on it.
Getting Around
State Highway 1 is the only main road. It is a busy highway, not a place to walk or cycle casually, and local roads off it are country roads without a town footpath network. Hewlett Road, Sloane Road and Salmon Road serve lifestyle properties and farms.
Takahiwai Road is the link toward Takahiwai Marae and the southern side of the harbour. There is no railway station in Mata. The North Auckland Line passes through the wider southern district, but Mata is not a passenger stop.
For fuel, groceries and other errands, plan on Whangārei to the north or Ruakākā to the south. If you are only passing through, Mata will register as a change in the landscape: the built-up edge of the city drops away, and the highway runs through pasture before the Bream Bay settlements begin.
Allow extra time in wet weather. Rural driveways and unsealed side roads can be soft after rain, and stock or farm machinery may be on the local roads.
History and Heritage
The longer human story of this country belongs with the harbour, not with a township called Mata. Patuharakeke are the hapū of the southern harbour and Takahiwai.
Pā sites are recorded in the Takahiwai ranges and toward the harbour coast, including Pakauhokio at the western edge of those ranges. Takahiwai Marae remains the hapū centre. Visitors should not turn up unannounced. Marae are not public parks, and a visit needs an invitation or a public event.
A European farming presence is recorded in the school history of the district. Ruakākā School opened in 1898 in North Ruakākā.
Until 1916 it was a half-time school, sharing a teacher with Mata School. That is the firmest published trace of a Mata community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It does not, by itself, say when Mata School opened or when it closed, and no school building in Mata was confirmed as still in use.
The present schools named for the wider Bream Bay area are elsewhere: Ruakākā School and Bream Bay College in Ruakākā, One Tree Point School, and Waipū Primary School.
Later growth on this side of the district has followed the highway, the harbour industries at Marsden Point, and the spread of lifestyle properties, rather than the making of a new town at Mata.
The suburb remains a rural address. Anyone researching a particular farm, school site or family should start with Whangarei District Council property records, Papers Past, and the Patuharakeke materials linked from Takahiwai Marae, rather than with a general guide.
Getting Outdoors
Mata is countryside, not a reserve with a formed walking track. The outdoors here is the road verge, a farm boundary and a wide sky, and any walk needs to respect private land.
Gates, paddocks and driveways are not public access. If you are on a bike, use the local roads with care and stay off State Highway 1 unless you are set up for highway traffic.
The standout natural country nearby is the Takahiwai Hills, a vegetated range west of Marsden Bay. A Whangarei District Council landscape note, cited in published summaries of the area, describes kānuka forest on those ridges, including a large stand of coastal kānuka.
The hills are a landscape to see from the road, not an open summit walk from Mata. For a swim or a beach walk, continue to the Bream Bay coast or the harbour shore. Those places have their own access, tide and water-quality checks, and they are not in Mata.
