The centrepiece is a climate-controlled glasshouse environment housing tropical and subtropical plants, alongside a fernery, a specialist filmy fern house, and surrounding parkland. About Botanica
The complex has grown in stages over the decades. The Snow Conservatory, the main glasshouse, was constructed in 1970 and houses an extensive tropical and subtropical plant collection — palms, cycads, bromeliads, orchids, and other species that wouldn’t survive Northland’s occasional cold snaps outside. The warm, humid atmosphere inside is distinct from the outdoor gardens.
The Marge Maddren Fernery, added in 1987, is a dedicated fern display space covering New Zealand native and exotic fern species. Adjacent to it, a specialist filmy fern house maintains the very specific humidity and low-light conditions that filmy ferns (family Hymenophyllaceae) require — some of the most delicate ferns in the world, with leaves just one cell thick. It’s one of the few places in the country where these can be seen in cultivation.
The outdoor areas surrounding the conservatories include garden beds and mature planting that extend the visit beyond the indoor spaces. The whole complex is compact enough to explore in under an hour, making it an easy addition to a Town Basin visit given its central location.
What Visitors Say
TripAdvisor visitors consistently highlight Botanica as an underrated free attraction — particularly the tropical conservatory as a warm and lush space to explore on a wet day. The filmy fern house draws specific mention from visitors with a botanical interest as a genuinely rare experience. Several note the combination of indoor and outdoor areas makes it feel more substantial than expected from a free city-centre garden.
