Riverside is a central suburb of Whangārei, sitting east of the city centre on the far side of the Hātea River. In te reo Māori it is known as Ōruku.
The suburb is a residential strip shaped by the river, the harbour edge and Riverside Drive, the arterial that carries traffic on toward Onerahi and Whangārei Heads. Its best-known open space is Pohe Island, home to William Fraser Memorial Park, a large recreation park with direct access to the Hātea Loop walkway.
Homes sit close to the city, yet the river and parkland give the area a more open feel than the streets around the Town Basin. For visitors it is less a shopping stop than a place to walk, cycle and use the sports and play facilities beside the harbour.

About Riverside
Riverside occupies the eastern bank of the Hātea River where the river meets Whangārei Harbour. From the city side, the approach is across the water, with Te Matau ā Pohe framing the view toward Pohe Island. Once over the river, Riverside Drive becomes the spine of the suburb and the main route out of town toward Onerahi.
The built character is suburban rather than commercial. Council structure planning for this side of the harbour describes urban housing along Riverside Drive, with the road acting as the arterial link between the city and the Onerahi peninsula. There is no confirmed local shopping centre in the suburb itself. Day-to-day shops and services are back in central Whangārei, or further along the road at Onerahi.
The defining public space is Pohe Island, a broad open area at the river mouth. Whangarei District Council manages William Fraser Memorial Park here as a recreation destination: playground, skate and bike facilities, sports fields and paved walks, with the Hātea Loop shared path passing through. Free all-day parking is available at the Pohe Island carpark on Pohe Island Road.
Low-lying ground beside Riverside Drive and Onerahi Road has been identified in council structure planning as stormwater-sensitive, and in places it functions as flood storage during a peak event. That is a feature of the river-edge setting rather than a closure, but it is worth knowing if you are looking at sections close to the drive.
The Māori name Ōruku is recorded for the suburb. A published translation, and a single iwi affiliation for this specific place, were not confirmed in council sources, so those details are left unstated here.
Getting Around
Riverside Drive is the road you will use. It leaves the city side of the Hātea River, runs through the suburb and continues as the route to Onerahi Road. Department of Conservation access notes for Whangārei Heads follow the same line: Riverside Drive, then Onerahi Road, then Whangārei Heads Road at the roundabout.
For the park, turn in opposite Kauri Place onto Pohe Island Road. The carpark is free and open all day, with further parking near the bike park and dog park.
On foot or by bike, the Hātea Loop is the useful link, tying the island into the shared path around the river. No train or ferry service was confirmed for the suburb, and a specific bus route number was not verified, so check local timetables if you are relying on public transport.
Getting Outdoors
Most outdoor time in Riverside is spent on Pohe Island. William Fraser Memorial Park is set up for informal play and for organised sport. Council lists a destination playground, a public skate park, a cycle circuit, pump track and bike skills area, sports fields, toilets and paved walks.
Northland Rugby is based at the park. The BMX club facility is members only, and the Camera Obscura Timatatanga Hou is opened with an access code available on request.
Dogs have a fully fenced exercise area off Dave Culham Drive. They are prohibited on the sports grounds and must be on a leash elsewhere in the park.
The Hātea Loop is the other standout: a shared walking and cycling path with easy access from the island, useful both as a local loop and as a way back toward the city side of the river.
History and Heritage
The park takes its name from William Mackenzie Fraser, an engineer for Whangarei County from 1907 to 1918. He held positions with the Whangarei Harbour Board from 1920 until 1947, then served as a county council member from 1947 until his death in 1960.
The island and park sit on land that has long been tied to the working harbour, between the Hātea River mouth and the wider Whangārei Harbour.
Council adopted a master plan for William Fraser Memorial Park on Pohe Island in September 2019. The plan looks ahead to restored habitat, including salt marsh, wetland and woody planting, and to a spine path linking lookouts across the site, including views back over the Hātea River. Those are planned directions for the park, not a claim that every element is already built.
