Peach Cove Track Whangarei Heads: Hard Hike to a Remote Coastal Beach

The Peach Cove Track earns its reputation as one of the harder day walks at Whangārei Heads — a steep climb through coastal bush that ends at a small, remote sandy beach accessible only on foot. The 880 steps down to the beach are a memorable feature in themselves. DOC manages the Peach Cove Hut at the bottom for those who want to make a night of it.

About the Track

The Peach Cove Track starts from the Ocean Beach Road carpark and climbs immediately onto an exposed ridgeline with views back over Ocean Beach and Whangārei Harbour. The opening section is the most demanding — steep and unshaded, it asks something of you before the bush closes in and provides shelter for the descent.

The descent to the beach is defined by the 880 steps — a long, sometimes steep stairway cut into the hillside that drops you down to Peach Cove. It’s a dramatic arrival: a small, enclosed sandy beach backed by bush, with no road access and usually very few people. The seclusion is the point.

A DOC hut sits above the beach at Peach Cove for those wanting to stay overnight. Bookings and fees apply — see the DOC website before visiting. Day visitors are welcome but should note the return climb up those 880 steps is tiring on legs that have already done the full descent.

What Visitors Say

“Beautiful, isolated beach that feels like a real reward for the effort — and the effort is real. Those 880 steps are no joke on the way back up. Take plenty of water and give yourself more time than you think.” — TripAdvisor reviewer

“Worth every step. Peach Cove is the kind of place that exists in your head as the ideal ‘hidden beach’ — and the real thing actually lives up to it. Hard work to get there, which is exactly why it’s not crowded.” — AllTrails reviewer
