The Tūtūkākā Lighthouse Walk is a short coastal track on the headland above Tūtūkākā Marina, reaching the lighthouse on the tip of the point with views across the ocean to the Poor Knights Islands. The walk is tide-dependent — the causeway section must be crossed within about an hour of low tide — and involves some steep climbing and potentially slippery sections after rain. The reward is one of the better coastal viewpoints on the Tūtūkākā Coast.

About the Walk
The track heads out from the marina area along the Tūtūkākā headland, climbing through coastal bush and over rocky terrain to reach the lighthouse at the tip of the point. The causeway — a low section of track that crosses rocky ground near sea level — becomes impassable at high tide. This is a firm requirement, not a suggestion: people have been stranded on the lighthouse side of the causeway by a rising tide. Check the tide tables before setting out and aim to cross the causeway well within the 1-hour window.
Once past the causeway, the track continues up to the lighthouse with increasingly expansive views. The Poor Knights Islands are clearly visible on a fine day, as is the Tūtūkākā Coast stretching north. The lighthouse itself is functional rather than scenic, but the headland around it offers good vantage points in multiple directions.
The track is steep in places and loose rock sections become slippery after rain. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The descent can be harder than the ascent in wet conditions.
What Visitors Say
“Check the tides before you go — non-negotiable. We got the timing right and the views from the top were absolutely worth the steep climb. Poor Knights on the horizon.”
“A proper little adventure for a short walk. The causeway is exciting when you know the tide is coming in. Take good shoes — the rocks are steep and can be slippery.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the tide important for this walk?
The causeway section of the track crosses low ground near sea level and is covered by water at high tide. You must cross within about 1 hour of low tide — before the tide turns — to avoid being stranded on the far side. Check an accurate tide table for the Tūtūkākā area before you go.
How hard is the Tūtūkākā Lighthouse Walk?
Moderate — there are steep sections with loose and slippery rock, particularly in wet conditions. The 175m elevation gain is concentrated over a short distance. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
Can I see the Poor Knights Islands from the lighthouse?
Yes — on a clear day the Poor Knights Islands are clearly visible from the lighthouse and the upper sections of the track.
How long does the walk take?
Approximately 1 hour return for the 2.6 km track, not including time spent at the lighthouse viewpoint.
Where do I park?
There is a car park near Tūtūkākā Marina, a short walk from the track start.
